"Yoga for the body, mind, spirit and for the community"
Piper comes to yoga organically from a background in theatre, music, and dance. Having spent a huge part of her childhood in Vaganova Russian ballet class, she brings a strong sense of discipline, posture, and alignment to the practice of yoga. It's not often that one is given the opportunity to turn a passion into a livelihood, and she feels fortunate to have done that a few times in her life, one of them being this awesome journey with yoga.

Piper has truly found her dharma in managing yoga studios, after leaving her ten year career as a Marketing Executive to teach and be of service to the yoga community. Her extensive experience working in the Chicago yoga and fitness community, along with her business background and sixth sense for hiring and recruiting the best make her a uniquely ideal candidate for handling the direction and operational vision for Zen Yoga Garage. Piper is a Yoga Alliance certified Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher with 200 hour Hot Yoga Teacher Training, 100 hour Power Yoga Teacher Training, Yoga Sculpt Teacher Training, and Kids Yoga Teacher Training all under her belt. She has led or facilitated numerous programs at CorePower Yoga, including eleven Teacher Trainings, Wellness Cleanse, Boot Camps, and Yogi Training.

Ann Starnes
Ann Stehr

"Live well, love much, laugh often"
Ann is originally from the great state of Minnesota. She began doing yoga in 2005 for the sole purpose of exercise! After moving to Chicago, going through monstrous changes some good and some bad she turned to the yoga community for support. While participating in her first teacher training in 2010 she found the yoga is so much more then just exercise. She is certified in Power, Hot, and Sculpt Yoga.

Knowing that she enjoys working and helping people she began teaching. She wants to spread the word that yoga is so much more then just exercise! She loves to make a sequence that challenges her students to use every muscle group that not only tests their bodies but also their minds. Her class will be sweaty, motivating and fun. She is so excited to be a part of the ZYG community and can’t wait to see familiar faces as well as meet new ones.

Fotini Karas
Fotini Karas

"Intimacy is the capacity to be rather weird with someone - and finding that's OK with them. Sometimes that person is yourself."
Fotini’s journey with yoga began 4 years ago at Indiana University. After a leg injury from running, she needed to find a new way to release the anxieties of school and life. Through much trial and error of different exercise routines, she found herself on her mat. Her first class was a little rocky because the pace of yoga was such different from the “runner’s high” she was used to. However, after a steady and dedicated practice she found her meditative “yoga high,” and could not get enough!

Fotini completed her first training in Hot Power Fusion in 2014 (Vibe Yoga Studio), a Power Yoga 200 hour certification in 2015 (CorePower Yoga), and her Prenatal certification in 2016 (Yogaview). She found a deep passion for helping mamas prepare their bodies and minds for labor, birth, and motherhood. Yoga has supported Fotini on and off her mat and she loves using her energy to spread its benefits. She enjoys meeting her students and helping them throughout their practice, so feel please introduce yourselves!

"Get comfortable being uncomfortable"
Alana is a native Chicagoan. She is a former competitive figure skater. Nationally qualified, she traveled the world training and competing for over 10 years. Her training as a skater included dance and gymnastics. She has always been an athlete. To her, fitness is not only working out, it’s a lifestyle.

Her passion with health and fitness has grown throughout her life to a point where she is now involved with bodybuilding. She truly enjoys improving on her physical strength and is amazed at what the body is capable of doing and becoming. Dedicated to the fit life, she naturally chose to pursue a career in personal training. She enjoys inspiring as well as challenging others, and helping them achieve their goals.

A point came in Alana’s life where she felt the need for something more, something new, and something that was outside the box. That is when she stepped into her first yoga class and found the perfect balance in her life. Her yoga journey truly began when she stepped into Monika Marynowski’s sculpt class where she was challenged physically and mentally on a whole new level. Encouraged and inspired by Monika, she enrolled in yoga sculpt teacher training at Core Power Yoga. In 2012 she became a certified Yoga Sculpt instructor and has taught at CPY the past 4 years.

Alana came to Zen because she wants to be part of this community of amazing teachers and students and who with she feels she can share her experience, technique and passion. It also provides the opportunity for her to continue to grow as a teacher. Alana feels Yoga Sculpt offers a perfect mental and physical balance. It focuses both on the strengthening of the body using weights as well as the strengthening of the mind as it enables you to believe in your capabilities, build patience and confidence.

Alana routinely says yoga is a practice. It is not about being perfect. She encourages her students to get comfortable by being uncomfortable because she believes that is how students open themselves to opportunities, continue growing, and get mentally and physically stronger. She offers an intense class with creative sequences and fun music.

"Peace. It doesn't mean to be a place of no hard work"
My journey to yoga did not take a linear path. My love for fitness and movement started at a very young age and evolved over the years. Some of my phases and cycles included tennis, running, weight training, biking … basically anything to keep my heart pumping and body strong.

While working and living abroad in Southeast Asia, I discovered the beautiful practice of yoga. In a small gym studio, with an instructor that barely spoke English, I was introduced to the sacred practice of Ashtanga. I was hooked. That’s where the certifications, workshops and learning began. Upon returning to the United States, I transitioned into a corporate role for some time, but I still continued my study of yoga. In 2014, I decided to leave the corporate setting to teach yoga full time.

For me, the yoking of the body, mind and spirit is the most profound element to the practice of yoga. Because of the link that yoga promotes, it has become a source of stability during the constant changes that are a part of life. It’s from this place of stability that I was able to evolve and develop, which is why I am so passionate about sharing this practice with others. I am so excited to be guiding the transformative practice of yoga with new and experienced practitioners alike.

Danny Benoit
Danny Benoit

"Be free! Not secure. Take a chance."
Danny turned to yoga in 1991 to help settle his mind after serving in the Gulf War. Healing happened and his yoga practice stopped. He rekindled his affair with yoga in 1995 looking for a new physical challenge. The affair turned to love as he felt his physical practice turn into a spiritual awakening. This awakening has kept him connected to the mat ever since.

After years of unfulfilled corporate work Danny left California for a year long road trip throughout the US and Mexico to “rediscover” himself. This newfound clarity led him to Nepal where he taught Nepali’s to fly airplanes in the Himalayas’. Once there, he searched throughout his village of Bharatpur for a yoga studio to no avail. Inspired by conversations with his students, he started teaching yoga in the flight school airplane hangar. The Asana Courses in B.K.S. Iyengar’s “Light on Yoga” would be his teaching guide. After a year in Nepal he headed back to the U.S. and settled in Chicago. Through his travels he discovered what he wanted out of life. “To seek! To teach! The peaks of joy I’ve experience in seeing a student achieve their ‘next level’ is a driving force in my life. Using my knowledge and experiences to help others grow is where it’s at for me.”

Danny creates a fun-filled learning environment loaded with energy that will be sure to touch you mentally, physically, and spiritually.

"We are not what we know but what we are willing to learn"
Tracy Bleier has been a local teacher and community leader/builder for the past twenty years. She believes that our lives give us precious opportunities to learn about ourselves and she uses observations about her own life, refined from her years of practice, to tap into universal truths that feed the conversations she infuses into her classes.

Tracy teaches a range of yoga experiences, including the physical practices of hatha vinyasa yoga and bowspring and the contemplative practices of meditation and journaling.

Tracy is happily married and is a proud mama to three boys, two dogs and a cat. She recently moved to Chicago where, in addition to teaching and caring for her family, she is writing her first memoir.

Natalie Drogos
Natalie Drogos

"Every moment is a fresh beginning"
Natalie naturally gravitated toward yoga after spending most of her childhood and early adult years devoted to dance. Yoga organically allowed her to stay in motion with ease, fluidity and gentleness. Diving deeper into her personal practice, Natalie discovered there is more to yoga than just movement. Breath, authenticity and compassion encompassed her heart and soul.

Always up for an adventure, Natalie was inspired by a friend to journey to India for her first ever yoga retreat. It was then, during a 2 hour practice led by a quirky Indian man name Yosef on an unfinished rooftop with cement blocks wrapped in newspaper for props, when Natalie decided that she must turn this passion into purpose.

Upon returning to the states, Natalie crossed a threshold in her career, moving away from traditional 9-5 work in entertainment and arts and enrolled in Teacher Training. She completed her 200 hour RYT certification in 2015 at Zen Yoga Garage and apprenticed under the wisdom and beauty of Tracy Bleier. Inspired by constant learning, she hopes to continue her yoga education in the future. Aspiring to share the love of yoga with all, Natalie hopes her playful movement and energizing soul allow others to delve within themselves to find clarity, individuality, peace and bliss.

Christopher Morehead
Christopher Morehead

Chris came to yoga six years ago in Fayetteville, Arkansas after a co-worker suggested he escape his stressful work environment through the practice. Apprehensive he tagged along with his friend to what would be the first of many yoga classes. It was a small studio… very small, but the experience changed his life for the better. It was a journey that slowly started to heal physical injuries sustained from constant long distance running, as well as aided in the mending of a broken heart and low self-esteem. From that moment on he was hooked on all aspects of the practice and wanted to learn more.

After moving to Chicago in 2011 he experimented with various studios and styles, ultimately sticking to a regular Bikram practice, but felt that something was missing. In the spring of 2013 he found a studio that quickly became a second home. He received his 200 RYT at Zen Yoga Garage and is grateful to have apprenticed under the guidance of Margo Kellison-Lightburn and is extremely excited to continue his educational journey one day. With a strong focus on alignment expect longer holds, mixed with breath conscious flows, and some inversion playtime. Most importantly he hopes you walk away from his class with a lighter heart and a few laughs. Chris hopes to inspire his students to dive deeper than the physical side of yoga to see how it can shine a brighter light into their life.

Jane Murphy
Jane Murphy

"Take time to do what makes your soul happy."
Jane's love of yoga started in 2011 after taking her first vinyasa yoga class. While she had tried different styles of yoga in the past, they never really resonated with her. They seemed a little boring and not physically challenging enough. The faster pace, beautiful music and spiritual energy that vinyasa yoga offers really clicked with her. She began practicing daily and loved how vinyasa yoga challenged her physically, but also noticed that it improved her mentally and emotionally.

Jane became a member at Zen Yoga Garage in 2013 shortly after they opened and her love for this studio and its community began. Looking to deepen her practice and learn how to share her passion of yoga with others, she signed up for Teacher Training at Zen Yoga Garage. She completed her 200 hour training there in May, 2014 and is a proud Zen graduate. Along with teaching classes at Zen Yoga Garage, you will still see her here most days of the week as a student, taking classes and enjoying the beautiful and warm yoga community at Zen Yoga Garage.

Musicality and the power of chant play an important role in her classes. Alison aspires to create a warm, welcoming, and fun experience for her students to learn more about themselves, to dive deeper into their practice, and to trust in the unknown.

After living, teaching, and learning in NYC for the past 6 years she is excited to move back home and share her passions for this practice. Alison received her 200 hour certification through CorePower Yoga in Chicago in 2009 and her 500 hour certification at Laughing Lotus NYC in 2013.

Gina Rizzo
Gina Rizzo

"Just remember lovers never lose 'cause they are free of thoughts unpure and of thought unkind."
Gina attended her first yoga class at a community center in Rogers Park with her roommates back in 1999. Over the following ten years, she would leave her mat and come back with varying levels of dedication, until she finally stayed put and found that her recurring love affair was not merely a hobby, but more so a necessity. Yoga brought her peace and clarity, allowed her to conquer fears, find strength, and be more in tune with her body and mind. When a change that big happens, how can you resist sharing it? Gina hopes her attention to detailed and safe alignment, her playful personality, and her focus on inclusion and accessibility will allow you to fall in love with yoga too. Gina knows HER learning is never done either. She received her 200 hour RYS teaching certificate in 2013, completed the level 2 teacher training at Yogaview in Chicago, attended Noah Maze's Teaching Intensive, as well as workshops with Maty Ezraty, Kathryn Budig, and continues to study with many teachers in the Chicago yoga community.

Angie Starz
Angie Starz

"Move mindfully, breathe deeply and allow the magic of yoga to do the work"
Angie is a yoga and mindfulness teacher based in Chicago, Illinois. She has completed over 2000 training hours in yoga asana (movement + postures), pranayama (breath exercises) and meditation and is a 500HR ERYT.

As a lifelong seeker, Angie continues to study and is influenced by a mixture of yoga philosophies including the Krishnamacharya lineage and the Tantra. She has studied with a variety of master teachers and is inspired not only by yoga but other movement and healing modalities.

Angie was introduced to yoga as a 16 year old in gym class and her early home practices consisted of Rodney Yee VHS tapes. Little did she know that this requirement for physical fitness would develop into a passion for this healing tradition. Yoga has helped Angie overcome body image issues, develop confidence as a business owner, relieve stress and anxiety issues, prevent migraines and, simply put, be a better human being.

Her teaching style is blended from years of movement and exploration. She serves her students by teaching to the audience at hand and letting go of her own agenda. She loves offering powerful and thoughtful Vinyasa flow just as much as she loves sharing more gentle, yet still breath centric, classes. Angie believes that in yoga there is no right or wrong. There is what is right for you and for your body. So while she is an anatomy and biomechanics geek, she empowers students to move in a way that honors their unique needs in an effort to heal and balance. She also believes that there is power in recognizing that we are multi-dimensional beings and her classes dive deeper than the physical layer encouraging self-inquiry and exploration in a safe space.

Currently, Angie teaches group yoga, meditation and mindfulness classes, private sessions, workshops and 200HR teacher trainings in Chicago, IL and Milwaukee, WI. In addition, Angie provides mentorship and coaching focused on living a better life off the mat.

Whether a group class, private session, workshop, teacher training or coaching session, Angie's goal for her clients is always the same - that they leave feeling nourished, light and happy.

Melissa Talleda
Melissa Talleda

"Yoga is a dance between control and surrender"
Melissa Talleda began her yoga practice as a young teenager on the east coast. As a dancer, she found yoga as a way to find more strength and flexibility to complement her practice; but yoga soon became her main focus. Yoga provided an outlet in which she felt fully in control of her own body, and began to feel a connection between body, mind, and spirit. The lessons learned through her practice, began to translate off the mat. Melissa learned to better deal with stress, loss, and disappointment, and wants to spread this freedom to others.

In 2012, after a professional dance career, Melissa moved to Chicago to obtain her Graduate Laban Certificate in Movement Analysis. She continued her education to obtain her RYT-200 through Zen Yoga Garage. Melissa incorporates her dance and movement analysis backgrounds to create a class that focuses on alignment while working to let go of the stresses of the day, and find mindfulness through movement. She aims for each student to feel cared for, challenged, and comfortable with where they are. Come flow with her for a fun, challenging, and loving practice!
